Do you have experience working with a particular type of stone?

Yes – we primarily work with all of the Bath Stone & Portland. For some context on their properties, and why they’re so widely used, the description below is helpful.

For many people, Bath Stone is the pinnacle of building stones, both because of its association with the city of Bath itself and it many stone buildings created from this material, and golden buff colour that is enriched by the sun, giving it a glow matched by few other building stones.

Aesthetics rightly win over the properties of the stone in this case, as Bath Stone might otherwise struggle to compete in today’s world. It is also best used with traditional masonry practices, using its bulk under compression for stability and longevity.

Bath Stone is a type of limestone, one of many oolitic limestones formed during the Jurassic Period that outcrop across the UK. Bath Stone is a freestone, which means it can be sawn or ‘squared up’ in any direction, unlike other rocks such as slate which forms distinct layers.

Portland is just one of its famous oolitic limestone cousins and, like Portland, Bath has given its name to a stage of Geological time – the Bathonian. It runs from 168-166 million years ago, right in the middle of the Jurassic.

What are the best types of stone that are resistant to ageing/weathering?

We use Bath Stone from a quarry near Limpley Stoke – stone mined from the top bed is ideally suited for for mouldings, and base-bed Bath Stone is used for sills and anything that will need to take a lot of weathering. The base bed stone, due to being formed under much higher pressures, is more resilient and resistant to erosion.

How long does it take to remove paint from an existing stone property?

Dependent on property size, how many caps there are on top of mullions and jams, and also how ornate the existing stonework is, the longer it will take to remove paint. Please contact us for more details, or give us a call on 07769 694 518.
